August 2021. Even if France is the land of wine par excellence, beer has been on the rise in recent months. Indeed, according to a study prepared by Nielsen, the turnover of beer sales accelerated by 18,5% and specialty beers increased by 25,7% during the first quarter of 2021. If, on the one hand , the brewing sector is dominated by large multinationals, many consumers in search of authenticity increasingly favor local beers.
On the occasion of World Beer Day, August 6, Tiendeo.fr, the platform specializing in digital catalogs, analyzed * the brands of beer with which the French have interacted over the past year, revealing a strong preference for national beers and a wide range of locally produced beers that meet the demands of consumers looking for local and responsible production.
National beers, followed by Dutch and Belgian beers
When it comes to beers, many French people remain loyal to traditional brands (brands which, in most cases, have been bought by foreign multinationals, but which maintain their production in the country). Among the 22 beers listed in the study, 10 labels bear witness to local production in France, representing 36% of the national interest.
However, the French are still very fond of imported beers, so much so that certain world-famous brands represent 64% of the total searches in the market. Dutch beers, along with the popular Heineken, undoubtedly generate the greatest consumer interest with 25,4% of searches, followed by Belgian beers with Grimbergen and Leffe (22%), and Mexican beers such as Corona. (7,3%).
On the other hand, although there has been a craft beer boom in recent years with the growth of local breweries, the global brewing giants dominate the rankings, accounting for 96,5% of total searches.
Heineken, the star of French consumers
Dutch beer Heineken tops the rankings and accounts for 25,4% of the country's beer searches. Second place in the ranking goes to Desperados (French production), from the Heineken International group, which accounts for 20,8% of total consumer searches. The French beer Kronenbourg, of the Carlsberg group, occupies the third place monopolizing 11,8% of the national interest.
